Usually we cannot clearly focus on a whole artwork all at once. Our eyes must explore the piece, moving from one detail to the next. Artists can create visual pathways to guide our exploration, directing our eyes to important "points of interest" and creating a visual flow that ties them together. Angled edges and pointy shapes act as directional arrows that push our vision along. In addition, shapes can be arranged so that their edges line up, reducing the complex relationships between forms to a few clear contours that are easily followed by the eye.
